I’m interested in your weight loss programs; how do I find out more?

We run regular multi-disciplinary weight assessment clinics.  This will be the first step for most patients interested in weight loss.  You will be seen by a number of expert specialists and allied health practitioners who will discuss your condition, needs, and expectations for weight loss.  They will perform some assessments, and order some investigations.  Once the results of the investigations are available, they will gather to formally discuss them, consider the implications for your healthcare needs, and formulate a tailored approach to recommend to you.  At this point, you will be invited to return for a follow-up consultation to discuss your results and the team’s treatment recommendations.

Your recommended treatment will usually commence at this stage, with further follow-up visits arranged.  All costs associated with the treatment are disclosed prior to commencement, and there will be an opportunity to dicuss payment options.  Discounts are offered  for advance purchases.  Patients undergoing weight loss surgery or endoscopy procedures would have them scheduled at this stage, and postoperative consultations would be scheduled.  You will be well supported by the clinic team throughout the duration of your journey and beyond.

I already know the treatment that I want; why do I have to see a multi-disciplinary team?

There is an established body of scientific literature that demonstrates that the care received in the context of an expert multi-disciplinary environment is superior to that received at the hands of individual clinicians for many complex health conditions.  Each member of the team brings a different area of expertise to bear on the topic, thereby expanding the expert knowledge and ability available to patients.  Working within a team structure ensures that the patient remains the focal point of all treatment decisions.  It also ensures efficient and thorough exchange of information about the patient between team members, minimising the impact that miscommunication might have on patient care, thereby enhancing patient safety.  It also ensures that assessments are robust, and that a broader spectrum of treatments is available to patients than that offered by a single clinician.  Being involved with a multi-disciplinary team means that no individual – no matter how well-intentioned – can completely dominate your treatment decisions, increasing the chance that your concerns will be comprehensively addressed at every stage of the process.

Although a lot of information is available in books, websites, and the media, its accuracy and reliability are variable, and it is usually not possible to assess the veracity of the material from which it is sourced.  Patients often rely on this information to make important treatment decisions, without being able to assess its reliability.  Taking advantage of the expertise of the team members will not only ensure that your assessment is thorough, efficient, and comprehensive, but also that the information you receive from them is reliable, considered, and tailored to your needs and expectations.  Often, we are able to highlight aspects of care that had not been considered by our patients when making their decision based on the information available to them, and this has frequently resulted in making a different, more robust decision.

Isn’t multi-disciplinary care more expensive?

We have considered this question carefully, and consulted widely in structuring our treatment programs and our pricing structures.  Having been involved in studying, establishing, and working within multi-disciplinary health teams in a variety of healthcare settings, Prof Cosman and his team have brought their knowledge and experience to address the needs of weight loss patients.  At Southern Cross Specialists, we have streamlined the consultation process and enhanced the efficiency of our treatment protocols, enabling us to keep costs to patients at a minimum.  By doing so, we have ensured that our prices remain competitive in comparison with other practices not offering this approach, so you can rest assured that the out-of-pocket cost of your treatment will not vary significantly simply due to its multi-disciplinary nature.  In fact, the out-of-pocket fee that we charge for weight loss surgery has decreased as a result of implementing a multi-disciplinary team approach.
